How do I become a translator?

See our page here. Basically it's free to qualify, all you need to do is complete a test in your chosen languages.

What kind of test do I have to pass?

Standard

Our Standard test is a short text of around 300 words that must be translated into your native language.

The text is reasonably simple, non-specialised content. Your translation will be reviewed by a native speaker to ensure that it accurately conveys the meaning of the original, is close to the style of the original, and contains no grammar, spelling or punctuation errors.

Pro

You must pass a Standard level test before you can take a Pro level test. Our Pro test is a more complex piece of text of around 500 words, again reviewed by a native speaker.

We are looking again for an accurate representation of the original, but we expect your style also to match more closely to the original text.

Proofread

You must pass a Standard level test before you can take a Proofreading test. Our Proofreading test consists of a source text and a translated text.

The translated text contains a number of errors which you must find and correct. We are looking for your ability to spot obvious mistakes and also to ensure that the translation is complete and is a reasonable translation of the original.


Not sure if you'll pass the Standard test?

You will probably pass if you are bilingual, with a good written style in your native language and fluency in your second language. We're looking for good, readable, natural human translation - not the next Shakespeare. You won't pass if you aren't fluent in two languages - for instance if you have only a high-school or casual spoken training in a language. Really, the best way of finding out is just to sign up and have a look at the test. It's quick and free.

I can't see any tests for my languages! When will they be available?

We are adding new languages one by one in order to ensure our quality stays high. If you have signed up and marked down your translation languages on the tests page, you will be informed automatically when tests are available.

How much do I get paid?

Standard
US$ 0.03/word
For example, a 300 word job will pay you US$ 9.00

Pro
US$ 0.08/word
For example, a 300 word job will pay you US$ 24.00

Proofread
US$ 0.04/word
For example, a 300 word job will pay you US$ 12.00

What makes this more attractive, is the fact that you will normally be able to complete several jobs per hour, and myGengo will provide a continuous stream of small jobs so you will be able to work whenever you choose. If you're a bilingual person it's far better than working in a bar or a restaurant.

When you pay out via PayPal there is a small fee of around $0.30 + 3% of the transaction amount - that's standard for PayPal.

Do I get paid straight away for each job?

No - because this way you would lose more money to PayPal in minimum transaction fees (around $0.30).
When you have earned $20 through jobs you can request a payout to your PayPal account.
This is processed manually within 24 hours.

What happens if a customer rejects one of my jobs?

In brief, you won't be paid for the job. You'll receive an email notifying you that someone has rejected your job.
At that point you can dispute the rejection if you think it's unfair, and a myGengo staff member will review the job.

We're shortly going to introduce a more flexible policy, where customers can ask for corrections up to 3 times before cancelling a job.See our Quality policy page for a bit more detail, or ask us for clarification.

How do I close my account?

Just send us an email and we'll do it in a couple of hours.
Bear in mind you will lose your test results and reputation you've built up as a translator.
We'll also pay out any remaining balance in your account.

What do Senior Translators do?

We use Senior Translators to create and review tests for translators, and to answer customer support requests in their languages. The work is paid monthly via PayPal and constitutes around 8-10 hours/month. Apply to become a Senior Translator here.

Why can't I see any details about the customer before I start a job?

We do it this way because we review orders ourselves and we filter out customers who aren't being fair.
In the case of bad behaviour (ie an unfair rejection of a translation) by a client you are free to report this and we will step in to review. We take it seriously.

Do you have any widgets, plugins or other ways I can translate jobs more quickly?

We're working on these right now and they'll be here very soon! Please keep using the online text editor or pasting in from your favourite software.

Why are you looking for translators, in a language that you don't currently offer to customers on the site?

We need a minimum number of translators in a language before we are able to offer that language to customers. So you may not see your language available on the site for a number of weeks after you take your test.
