The mission of the Translation Quality Manager is to allow myGengo to deliver the best quality, at the lowest price point and the largest scale. We want to make translation accessible to all, and to make that happen we have to give people high quality translation at a price point that everyone can afford.

Constant attention to accuracy, faithfuless of style, and speed of translation is key. But myGengo is built for scale, so you need to be metric-driven in everything you do, allowing us to manage 100,000 jobs but still keep quality high.

Day-to-day, you will manage Senior Translators and their reviews of new translators and current jobs in our system. You will discuss upcoming orders with our sales team, report and follow up on quality evaluations from customers and our internal staff. Communication and attention to metrics is key, and being a clear and inspiring voice for quality in the company is essential. This is not an academic role, you have to be comfortable getting your hands dirty and working with live jobs.

You must also build quality in the medium and long-term, by managing process and product improvements that will have the biggest impact and allow scale. So you'll work closely with our Translation Quality Hacker, our product team and our Translator Community Manager to implement quality solutions that work as we do 10x the volume every year. Success means keeping quality high while reducing cost-of-quality as we scale.

Responsibilities:

  • Measure and improve quality through day-to-day activities and long-term process and product improvements
  • Create scalable techniques for assessing and ensuring quality
  • Act as the single point of contact for quality management for the company, customers and translators
  • Manage Senior Translators and ensure accountability for quality in their language pairs
  • Communicate quality-related issues to the whole translator and applicant pool
  • Improve our testing procedures to ensure better quality within our translator pool
  • Institute routine quality checks
  • Improve translator UIs in collaboration with product team
  • Manage one-off projects and fire-fight when necessary

Requirements:

  • 4+ years experience in project management, localization management, or quality control
  • Can objectively demonstrate that you improved quality in past roles
  • Experience working in small teams without the infrastructure of a large organization
  • Creative and resourceful, not afraid to get hands dirty and fix things at the source
  • Great communicator in person and online
  • Not an academic — you see the business need for quality but the competing requirement for scale
  • Visa allowing work in Japan
  • Fluent English

Bonus skills:

It’s a bonus, but not required, to have experience in the following:

  • Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma experience
  • Professional translation experience
  • Knowledge of industry-standard translation tools
  • Fluency in 2+ languages

Benefits

  • Salary negotiable on experience
  • Stock options in myGengo, Inc.
  • Social Insurance as standard
  • Kick-ass computer setup :)

Description

We are looking for a Senior UI Engineer to help architect and scale the interfaces we offer to translators and customers alike. You should have a firm grasp on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and ideally have experience with server side related technologies, be it PHP, Python (Django), or JavaScript (Node.js). It should come as no surprise that you hold strong opinions concerning best practices (clearfix vs overflow, jQuery vs Prototype, etc). You know when it's best to use a battle-tested tool instead of writing your own.

You should know how to balance the various performance reviews you can get from tools such as YSlow or Google Page Speed, as well as understand how to draw your own conclusions and reliably measure performance outside the scope of basic tools. We're working towards creating a real-time, reliable translation tool to help benefit the world, and UI performance is a key aspect in this.

If this description fits you, we'd love to talk. This is an opportunity to work with some of the brightest engineers around in a space that's ripe for innovation. We've got several projects in the pipeline just waiting for someone to run with!

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain a performant user interface using standard web technologies
  • Define, implement and guide the direction of the UI Engineering team
    • What technologies the front-end consists of
    • Best practices for maintaining a performant interface while still enabling people to work together efficiently (e.g, when to use sprites)
    • Nurture and help further the professional development of the UI Engineering team
  • Work with server side developers to define necessary components (endpoints, etc) for shuttling data to and from the client side.
  • Work closely with designers to create a UI implementation that's fast and efficient across a range of devices
  • Work with product managers and stakeholders to identify time tables and estimates for project completion; provide them with realistic expectations of what can and can't be done.

Requirements:

  • Expert level understanding of HTML and CSS
  • Expert level understanding of JavaScript (JS)
    • In-depth knowledge of differences between JavaScript environments
    • You're not at a complete loss without jQuery.
    • What kinds of loops will not get optimized by Firefox's JS engine?
    • When to use innerHTML instead of working with DOM Node creation
    • The advantages of DocumentFragments, as well as their odd quirks
    • What the differences between native XHR and JSON-P techniques are for fetching data
    • Familiarity with Backbone.js or Spine.js
    • Different options for localStorage across the browser spectrum
    • Different approaches to enabling real-time communication from the various browser sets
  • In-depth understanding of browser quirks, going as far back as IE7.
    • Box model and other associated rendering differences
    • Best ways to target them CSS hacks, conditional comments drawbacks of each?
  • Basic proficiency with the Adobe suite of software, as all our designers work in it.
  • Basic Linux/Unix proficiency
  • Basic (or better) understanding of server side environments, be it PHP, Python, or JavaScript
  • Prior experience managing projects and facilitating communication between designers, developers, and
  • product managers.
  • Experience with version control (Git or Mercurial, we use Git)

Bonus skills:

It’s a bonus, but not required, to have experience in the following:

  • Links to personal or open source project contributions: this shows us you're passionate about solving problems and enabling a great experience for the end user.
  • Experience working with databases, be they Relational or NoSQL.
  • Experience with creating visualizations for data sets, as well as an understanding of why and how this can be useful to various parties.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and benefits, related to experience
  • Relocation package for candidates outside of Japan
  • State-assisted health insurance as standard (Japan has one of the world’s best healthcare systems)

Description

We are looking for a Sales Engineer to work closely with our customers who use the myGengo API and String. You must be a developer, with a great understanding of systems but an ability to talk to customers and other devs.

You will assist our larger customers with their API integrations, their use of String, and other technical support when using myGengo. You’ll help developers with questions about plugins and our API, and work with our Technical Evangelist in events like Hackathons. This role is essential for myGengo because our quest is to make translation and localization simple and easy to do — so we need to be the experts.

You will be creating custom scripts to load work via our API, explaining to developers how to use each part of our service, creating plugins for popular platforms, and providing maintenance for larger clients using myGengo for high volumes of content. As time goes on, you have the potential to lead a larger team of sales engineers and plugin developers.

You will work with clients all around the globe, both in person and via Skype.

Succeeding in this role involves learning everything you can about our system, our customers, our translators and most importantly, the technical possibilities, benefits, features and limitations of our products. This role requires fast learning, the ability to know when you need more help, and the proactive attitude to learn and work with new systems comfortably.

myGengo is a rapidly-growing startup with a star team of international investors. This is a chance to get on board early and grow with the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide best-in-class technical advice and support for myGengo’s customers using the API and String.
  • Assist on, and close your own sales by providing smooth technical integration.
  • Create re-usable techniques and code to handle large API implementations.
  • Be a reliable, friendly and positive face for customer support.
  • Be a bridge that communicates user needs to product/dev team, and product improvements to users.

Requirements:

  • Computer Science or similar degree
  • At least 1-2 years in a similar role
  • You *must* have programming experience in a major programming language. This is not a role for someone with no technical experience.
  • Fluent in either English or another language, and conversational in the other.
  • Flexibility in working over different programming languages (e.g. ability to switch between Python, PHP, Java is a big plus)
  • Ability to apply core concepts from one framework to another
  • Creativity in overcoming product limitations (either myGengo’s or client’s)
  • Organized, consistent workflow and collaboration with project managers
  • Ability to communicate the ins and outs of working with the API and String clearly and honestly.
  • Ability to communicate with enthusiasm about myGengo services
  • Ability to tweak and create client-specific sales presentations
  • Proactive about working with limited resources

Bonus skills:

It’s a bonus, but not required, to have experience in the following:

  • Experience in localization projects and programming for multi-lingual sites
  • Translation or language-related coding, Natural Language Processing

Benefits

  • State-assisted health insurance as standard (Japan has one of the world’s best healthcare systems)

Customers order human translation online through our website or our new API that lets you plug into our growing network of over 1,000 translators. We make cool tools like String to help making a multi-language site easy and fast.

Careers

myGengo is funded by awesome international investors including 500 Startups (Dave McClure), Felix Miller (Last.fm), Joshua Schachter (Delicious.com), Christoph Janz and high-profile local Japanese entrepreneurs. We’re growing fast, and the opportunity to be a part of the early team won’t be around for long.

Ideal working environment

We’re a strongly collaborative team where the design process and great ideas are valued, so we’ve created a flexible, comfortable, relaxed working space (standing desks, beanbags) to help things happen.

Deving

We work to create cool things, make the world a better place, and have fun.

Our staff are a smart & experienced international group (from Canada, USA, France, Germany, UK, Japan), all of whom have lived overseas.

Most of us speak more than one language, and all of us have a burning desire to help the world communicate.

Live and work in Japan

FAQs:

  • Do I need a Japanese Visa to apply?

No. For the roles mentioned above, we can arrange a visa for the right candidate. For less senior roles, we would normally ask that an applicant already has permission to work in Japan.

  • Do I need to speak Japanese?

No. You do need fluent English though.

  • I'd love to just visit for a couple of months. Is there a place for me?

We occasionally work with programmers who are in town to visit; it can be a great way for you to pay your way and make cool stuff while on holiday. Contact us with your CV, a self-introduction and a clear idea of the dates you'll be in Tokyo, and we will consider it.

  • I've heard Tokyo is really expensive! How far will my salary go?

If you WANT to spend a lot of money in Tokyo, it's certainly possible. However day-to-day life is as affordable as any major city, and the scare stories are untrue. You can easily get a sizable lunch for US $8, while a beer would normally set you back US$6. Rent can be more expensive than the US (but no worse than New York) and apartment sizes are relatively small, but transport and other living costs are low. Income tax is similar to the US, and healthcare is heavily subsidized by the government, so your salary goes a long way further than it might in San Francisco.
