Translation APIs: Google shutting down, but are there alternatives?

Looking for Google translate alternatives? In case you haven’t heard, Google announced the deprecation of a host of APIs last Friday. Judging by the comments in the post, the biggest disappointment seems to be among Translate API developers, who have built any number of fun and useful services relying on this API. So if your service currently relies on Google’s Translate API, you have until December 2011 to implement an alternative. At myGengo we’re all about reducing friction, and we have an alternative for you!   Switch to the myGengo API and get $25 in FREE credits If... Read more

Using Google Search to Avoid Translation Blunders

There are a variety of different kinds of words and phrases that lend themselves to mistranslation. While working on a Japanese to English translation the other day, I came across a loanword from English that was cut short when it was incorporated into Japanese. Thankfully, there are a few tools that can come in handy in these kind of tricky situations. For instance, using Google search can be a great way to find that right word. Here’s an example of how it helped me.  I was translating a letter of recommendation and came across a sentence saying that the subject of the letter ha... Read more

New York Times Profiles Google Translate

Google Translate was featured this week in the Technology section of the New York Times. The article examines the endless possibilities and the impressive manpower and resources that Google and its Translate service has. In particular, Google has some interesting new features in the works, like translating auto-generated captions on Youtube videos, voice-to-voice translations for mobile phones running Google's Android OS, and taking pictures of non-English menus and getting it translated instantly. All this technology is exciting and interesting, but the article glances over th... Read more

Esperanto: language of love and tolerance

The week long World Esperanto Congress is concluding tomorrow (Friday 1 August 2009) in Bialystok, Poland. The 94th Congress in Bialystok coincides with the 150th anniversary and birthplace of Dr. L.L. Zamenhof, who created Esperanto in the hopes that it will be adopted as an easy, flexible and universal second language that would be used by people all around the world to spread love, peace and understanding. The language is not tied to any one ethic group or country, and has never been a national language. Interestingly however there is research showing that studying Esperanto before another foreign language helps with the acquisition of t... Read more

Reaching out to the Middle East

Reaching out to the Middle East in the forms of traditional and new media seems like the latest international phenomenon these days. We saw it with the Iranian election and Twitter, Google and Facebook offering its services in Persian, and the BBC launching its Arabic-language television channel last year. This promotes greater understanding, communication and awareness of this part of the world, which is often times overlooked or misrepresented in the media. China Central Television (CCTV) station has joined the movement as well, and since 25 July a new Arabic language television channel has been on the air for the 300 million people liv... Read more

Facebook Connect

We mentioned last week that Google Friend Connect recently announced that it is available in 47 languages. Well this week it's Facebook's turn with the announcement of it's Facebook Connect in 64 languages, as stated on the official Facebook Developers News blog. For those who are not familiar with Facebook Connect, it is an application on third-party websites that allows Facebook users to login and post articles, blogs, pictures, etc. back onto the News Feed. In other words, your friends on Facebook can look and comment on the your posts right in the home page, without having to go directly to that link. It's important to note that if fr... Read more
