G-Gengo: A Translation Plugin for GMail

We’ve had some really awesome plugins come in from third-party developers working in our API Lab. These plugins make it convenient to order professional-quality translations from within the platform or content management system of your choice, allowing anyone to grow their audience and reach. The next plugin we are covering is G-Gengo by Josh Chia, which allows you to order human translations from within Google’s Gmail. Gmail is one of the most popular Web mail services in the world and, by a recent count, boasts over 260 million users worldwide. Installing the Plugin Before... Read more

Introducing myGengo Passport

In addition to our Express and String products, we offer a full-fledged Translation API to any developers and companies interested in integrating with our systems. We’ve seen some great plugins and applications get built on top of this platform, but one of the chief questions we’ve been getting from customers is, “what is my API key?” A little back-story is probably in order: API keys are a little bit like IDs that plugins and applications rely on to tell myGengo that you’re, well, you. Without it, we’d have no way to say, “all right, this translation is done, let’s return it for this user." These keys aren’t exactly user-friendly, appare... Read more

WordPress Translation Plugin: API Lab Profile

We’re impressed with the great work the third-party developers tinkering in our API Lab have been doing — the plugins they are creating are making it easier to translate content from within the most widely used platforms around the world. To share these killer plugins, we’ve decided to highlight each on the blog — letting you know more about the platforms, how the plugins work, and including screenshots of the plugins in action. Professional Translation within your WordPress site In this first edition, let’s take a look at the plugin developed for WordPress available for downl... Read more

Japanese Hackathon with an International Focus

Back in March I made a pretty big decision to come over to Japan (Tokyo) and work with myGengo. I've worked with and advised a few different startups in and around the United States, and I thought it'd be great to check out startup culture in a different country. Examining the startup culture of Japan is enough content for a different blog post entirely, so I won't focus on that, but the long and short of it is that while it has potential, it's still got a ways to go before it becomes as lively as the environments you'll find in the United States. This has massive potential to chan... Read more

Translation APIs: Google shutting down, but are there alternatives?

Looking for Google translate alternatives? In case you haven’t heard, Google announced the deprecation of a host of APIs last Friday. Judging by the comments in the post, the biggest disappointment seems to be among Translate API developers, who have built any number of fun and useful services relying on this API. So if your service currently relies on Google’s Translate API, you have until December 2011 to implement an alternative. At myGengo we’re all about reducing friction, and we have an alternative for you!   Switch to the myGengo API and get $25 in FREE credits If... Read more

Don’t Build Your Own Translation Platform!

In the engineering world, there’s a term thrown about to describe situations where you’ve wound up reinventing the wheel: “NIH Syndrome”, or “Not Invented Here”. The term itself has a larger application than just engineering-related projects, which the related Wikipedia article does an excellent job of summarizing. We see this often with other web companies and services whose first step when going global is creating their own translation platform from scratch. It’s an understandable syndrome to have - if there’s a lot of domain-specific logic, and it’s easy to think that handing... Read more

6 Uses for Machine Translation That Don’t Suck

myGengo is built on the premise that human translation is irreplaceable. It will always be necessary for the translation of content where both unnatural language and mistakes like this might cost you money. This may include product descriptions on your e-commerce site, your company’s blog, or simply emails to your overseas clients - all of which we are confident we provide a scalable and cost-effective human translation solution for. That said, we see the advancements with Google Translate and other machine translation services not as competition, but as a vital tool. There are cou... Read more

API Lab Update: Announcing the Winners!

We are psyched to be announcing our API Lab Winners page. It showcases a suite of 18 new plug-ins created in just ten weeks that make human translation available at the touch of a button from within Wordpress, Ruby on Rails, Firefox, and a host of other massively popular platforms. Hailing from four separate continents, the independent developers behind each plug-in were rewarded with cash prizes for their efforts. The Lab Opens Just last December, we announced the API Lab, our initiative aimed at integrating myGengo’s human translation platform with as many CMS and blogging pla... Read more

myGengo Unlocks the Door to the $45,000 API Lab

Yesterday we set aside a pool of over $45,000 to reward developers for creating great human translation plugins using our API. We have launched what we call the API Lab — a space for the development community to experiment and create innovative translation plugins for blogging, e-commerce and other third party platforms.  Connecting to our translation API allows you to order human translation within your existing app, rather than copying and pasting text into an order form, or constantly emailing translators. It's an equivalent leap to banking online instead of mailing a check, a... Read more
