A Translator’s Guide to Financial Stability

This is a guest post written by Deborah Cornwell-Kelly, a myGengo Senior Translator in the Italian to English language pair. Learn more about Deborah at her translation website. There is a recurrent conversation I have always found difficult to handle. It’s one that threatens my sense of identity––one that happens more often than not. Whether it takes place at the playground after picking up the kids, over an aperitif in a trendy bar in Milan or at a dinner party with newly acquainted friends––it’s inevitable. Sooner or later, the conversation shifts and somewhat hesitantly the... Read more

An Inside Look at Video Game Localization (Part I)

This is part one of a two-part post written by Thaís Castanheira, a myGengo Senior Translator in the English to Brazilian Portuguese language pair. Learn more about Thais by checking out her translation website. When people ask what I do for a living, I usually tell them I’m a translator. The fun part is when they ask what kind of translation and I get to say “I localize games.” Of course, anytime I share my secret with kids (especially young boys), their response is always the same. They light up and marvel with envy, “wooow! She translates video games!” Yes, localizing game... Read more

myGengo Attends CeBIT 2012

At myGengo, we know an opportunity when we see one. That’s why we weren’t about to miss out on attending CeBIT 2012—the world’s largest computer and IT-trade show—an annual event held in Hanover, Germany that spans 5 days and attracts industry representatives from 100 countries worldwide. During the event, our German team was hard at work (and at play) meeting existing partners, networking with potential clients and most importantly, making new connections in order to land even more jobs for our talented team of translators. The History of CeBIT The first independently organi... Read more

5 Words You Had No Idea Were Japanese

Here's a riddle for you. What’s something that can be borrowed, but never has to be returned? And no, it’s not my Roll n’ Pour! (Which I want back by the way, you know who you are!) Give up? The answer is loanwords—or words that have been adopted by speakers of a language different than the language in which they originated. Chances are you didn't even realize some of the words you've been using all this time weren't actually English in the first place. What do you say we take a look at a few of them right now? The Low Down on Loanwords Today, we're going to reveal 5 words... Read more

Chinese Social Media 101

The presence of Chinese on the internet is expanding rapidly — some predictions foresee it overtaking English as the new leading language online by as early as 2014. Have you had the content of your website, app or whatever else it is you want front and center in China translated and localized? And are you still chomping at the bit to increase your visibility in China? If yes, perhaps wrapping your head around Chinese social media is the next step — with over 500 million Chinese netizens online and counting, it’s certainly something to consider.   Understanding Chinese Social M... myGengo in Zurich: Drupal Goes Global

Back in January, we were contacted by MD Systems about a hackathon they were putting on in Zurich, Switzerland, to enhance internationalization and localization tools for the Drupal Content Management System (CMS). Drupal, one of the most widely deployed CMS, is regularly employed by Sony, Warner Brothers, Fast Company, The Economist and more. At myGengo, we think our API and focus on quality, affordable human translation would be a great fit for any Drupal site that's looking to localize into another language, so we made an effort to get out to Zurich to support the cause. Fo... Read more

Interview with Translator David Bellos

To say that author and award-winning translator David Bellos knows a thing or two about translation would be an understatement. With over 40 years of experience, he has achieved international recognition for his works as a translator and biographer and has an impressive list of acclaimed publications to his name, including his most recently published book, Is that a Fish in Your Ear? Translation and the Meaning of Everything. In his new book, Bellos debunks many of the myths and misconceptions about what translators do (and don’t do), and what translation is (and isn’t), as he ta... Read more
